Role Overview
Rapid7 is seeking talented students to join our engineering teams in Belfast for their placement year. Our placement programme is a key part of developing the next generation of software engineers, and our interns become valued members of our engineering teams from day one.
Software engineering is evolving rapidly, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) fundamentally changing how we design, build, test and maintain software. At Rapid7, we’re adopting an AI-first approach to software engineering, using AI-powered tools and techniques throughout the development lifecycle to solve complex problems, accelerate delivery and build high-quality, secure software.
As a Software Engineering Intern, you’ll gain hands-on experience working with modern technologies, development practices and AI-powered engineering tools. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to real products, learn from experienced engineers and develop the technical skills and judgement needed to succeed in an increasingly AI-driven industry.
As a Software Engineering Intern at Rapid7 you will:
- Adopt an AI-first approach to software development, using AI-powered tools throughout the software development lifecycle, from understanding requirements and exploring solutions to implementation, testing and debugging.
- Apply your programming knowledge to design, build, test and maintain production software, combining AI-assisted development with sound engineering principles.
- Critically evaluate and validate AI-generated solutions, applying engineering judgement and best practices for code quality, security and responsible AI usage.
- Explore emerging AI technologies and automation, identifying opportunities to improve engineering workflows and reduce repetitive tasks.
- Participate in the design and planning of new features, collaborating with engineers, UX and Product Management to deliver improvements that meet customer needs.
- Develop an understanding of our products, technologies and the cybersecurity challenges we help customers solve.
- Participate in agile development practices, including code reviews, planning and continuous improvement.

Successful candidates will be:
- Currently enrolled at one of our partner universities, in their second year studying Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related discipline, and seeking a 12-month placement (June 2027 – May 2028).
- Currently residing in Northern Ireland with the Right to Work in the UK.
- Equipped with a solid foundation in programming and software engineering principles, with an enthusiasm for learning new technologies.
- Curious about AI and excited to explore how it can transform software engineering.
- Strong problem solvers with good communication skills, a collaborative mindset and a willingness to learn.
Desirable Criteria
- Personal, academic or open-source software projects. GitHub portfolios are welcome.
- Experience experimenting with AI-assisted development tools, with an interest in sharing what you’ve learned.
